Settling in

Settling in time at nursery is important and handled in a caring way.

  1. Initial visit - Parents and children are encouraged to visit the nursery where they will receive a handbook be shown round by a member of the management team who will be able to pass on detailed information about the nursery and answer any questions they may have and be introduced to their keyworker.

  2. Complete appropriate forms, i.e. Application Enrolment details, “All about me” Book which details children’s likes and dislikes, habits and skills

  3. Parent and their child’s keyworker take time to discuss settling in options and other important information i.e. any little habits, likes or dislikes, bringing a familiar toy or comforter from home to assist if their child becomes upset, any words used by their child for an item “bobo = bottle/juice, “dodo”= dummy.

  4. Your keyworker will discuss with you what experiences your child will be involved in at nursery so that you can talk to them about what fun they will have.

  5. Settling in to a new room

The transition from one room or group to another can be quite exciting for the child but daunting also.

Children are given lots of support at this time, with frequent opportunities to visit their new room, meet with their new keyworker and take part in activities and free play with new playmates.

Information about the child is passed between keyworkers through transition meetings, personal profiles and internal transition records. Visits are built up from as early as 3 months before the child moves with the consent of parents.
